Physiotherapy for Babies!

Some people may be surprised to know that babies may need physio too. Reasons babies could benefit from physiotherapy include:

  • Torticollis (head tilting one way) and/or plagiocephaly (flat spot on a baby's head)

  • Delayed motor skills

  • Muscle tension

  • Birth injury (such as a shoulder dislocation)

  • Neurological or brain injury (such as cerebral palsy)

  • Orthopedic conditions (limb differences, club foot, bone development conditions)

  • Asymmetrical movement patterns

  • Hip dysplasia

If your baby has spent any time in the NICU, it's recommended to have a physiotherapy assessment within the first year. The reason for this is that they may be more likely to develop things like torticollis, plagiocephaly and a delay in motor skills (but physios can give you tips and tricks on how to monitor and prevent it!)

Sometimes parents and caregivers bring their babies to physio for developmental milestone checks, even if nothing seems concerning. It can be helpful for peace of mind and is a chance to ask questions to a real human physio (rather than AI and Dr. Google!)

If you're in a rural and remote place without a pediatric physio nearby, you can access physiotherapy via telehealth! It's amazing what we can assess just by watching you baby move on video call.

Shine Therapy Services offers physio for babies in person at our West Kelowna location, by home visit or telehealth video call. You can book online or send us a message to learn more!
