Rare Genetic Conditions

The Canadian Institute of Health Research estimates 1 in 25 Canadians are born with a rare genetic condition. These conditions can vary widely in their presentation and support needs. These support needs may also change through the years as they grow, develop and change.

What happens when you come to see a therapist for support with a rare genetic condition? We will research the condition, especially if we haven't seen it before, to ensure safety.

Some of these conditions are so rare, it's not uncommon for medical and therapy professionals to have not seen anyone with it previously. Regardless of the diagnosis, however, your therapist will work with you and your child on their unique goals and function!

For example, a physiotherapist will work with kids who have rare genetic conditions to strengthen their muscles so they can participate in meaningful activities. SLPs will work with them to ensure they can communicate as much as possible with those around them. An OT can assist with any fine motor, emotional regulation, sensory processing and routine based goals. Counselling can help with their mental health, confidence building and acceptance & commitment therapy.

If you're looking for therapy support in the West Kelowna area, reach out to our team! We can't wait to see your little one SHINE!
