What is DIRFloortime Therapy?

DIRFloortime is a relationship-based approach that helps children develop communication, emotional regulation, social skills, and confidence through play. This approach ensures sessions are designed around a child's specific development and individual differences, rather than expecting them to fit a specific therapy model. Science supports DIRFloortime in fostering stronger social connection, communication, improved caregiver-child relationships, and foundational skills for daily living.

DIR stands for Developmental, Individual-differences and Relationship-based. It was developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan who wanted to create a framework for understanding human development. Rather than focus on specific tasks, skills and behaviours, the DIRFloortime model approaches therapy with a goal of building healthy foundations for social, emotional and intellectual capacities.

Our OT Emily has taken DIRFloortime Therapy training and is excited to bring this approach to Shine Therapy Services! This approach is well suited to non-speaking autistic children but she brings this lens to all of her therapy sessions where appropriate.
