Did you know that every human, regardless of age has a pelvic floor?? Many kids have pelvic health symptoms ranging from constipation, bladder or bowel leaking, pelvic pain and more. This can have a big impact on both the child and your whole family, especially when it gets in the way of their favourite activities.
Pelvic physio for kids can help to address these symptoms. Some examples of what we can do in physio include:
Lots of education around pelvic health, lifestyle and physical activity to optimize digestive and bladder health.
Teaching your little ones about their pelvic floor and how it works. We don't do any internal work on kids. It's all about helping them tune into their own body.
Work on toilet posture and breathing mechanics.
Complete exercises for improving body awareness, core strength and pelvic mobility.
Normalizing the topic of poop and pee through games and stories to help take away any shame.
Collaborating with your doctor when they are implementing clean out protocols using things like laxatives and enemas.
How long does pelvic floor physio take to resolve your child's concerns? It really depends. Things like chronic constipation can take anywhere between 6 months to 2 years and other things like new habits of withholding can sometimes resolve after one session. Neurodiversity and sensory processing can impact toileting along with stress and anxiety. Every child will be different and in many cases we need a solid team approach to reach their pelvic health goals!
